A series of construction sites have been launched for months now to build new schools and kindergartens on the ruins of the buildings that were left devastated after the powerful earthquake that hit Albania on Nov 26 last year. The new educational facilities being rebuilt as part of the post-earthquake recovery and reconstruction programme are designed to meet high standards for habitability and environmental comfort and provide spaces for contemporary education.

Intense work is underway to make sure new school buildings open doors to their students on Nov 26, the first anniversary of the tragic earthquake that struck the country last year. One of the construction sites is that where new secondary school building Kajo Karafili is being built in the town of Shijak, where construction work has reached an advanced stage.

A total of 14 bigger and better educational facilities and kindergartens are slated to be rebuilt in the area of Kruje. Some 143 new schools up to European standards will complete within 2021 to replace the previous old buildings heavily damaged by the 2019 disaster.

“Dan Bajrami” school in Kurbin is one of the educational facilities that will be reborn over the ruins of the earthquake of last November.

Last Nov 26 (earthquake) left students and teachers in the village of Derven, Kruje, without an educational shelter, but by next November they will move into their nine-year school and kindergarten Kastrioti that is being built from scratch to meet optimum conditions.

The schools’ reconstruction is also underway for some 535 students and teachers at the secondary school “Llesh Nik Daka” in Lezhe, who will now be able to move into a brand new building, offering incomparable conditions than the previous old building. Another school being built is gymnasium “Arif Sula” in Mamurras.

At the construction site of the High School “Kajo Karafili” in Shijak, work has progressed at a fast pace and the new facility will be ready to welcome its students on November 26 within a space of 2900 square meters, designed to house more classrooms, laboratories, gym, green and recreational facilities for children, as well as all the functions of a community center.

In addition to schools’ rebuilding, schoolchildren will be also be provided textbooks for free, already a reality now, with students being provided free books from Oxford, Cambridge and Pearson, the highest quality sources of knowledge in Europe.
