Construction of an underground parking structure at the main square of the museum city of Berat in southwest Albania, and transforming the street between the main square and the religious sites into a pedestrian street would create a brand new city centre with a significant impact on Berat’s profile as a popular tourist destination.

The new main square in the city of Berat is gradually taking its final shape under a project designed to transform it into a new centre with an impact on area’s tourism development, and a functional area for local residents. An underground car parking lot will be built, whereas the street between the main square and the two religious sites will be turned into a pedestrian street.

As part of his visit to the city of Berat, Prime Minister Edi Rama inspected the ongoing work as part of this investment that is expected to give a fresh impetus to local economy and the tourist profile of the city of one above other windows. “The project completes the city’s entire puzzle. Guaranteed access to the Castle and the Gorica neighbourhood is envisaged. This is the central part and we will practically have a complete aureole of the city that preserves the traditional part of Berat,” Mayor Ervin Demo said.

The underground parking lot, one of the biggest public parking space in the country, is expected to accommodate more than 200 cars in an area of 8000 square meters and it will provide access to both sides of the new square.

According to Berat Mayor, “construction of the new square is one of the long-sought and pledged projects for local residents.” 

On his part, PM Rama added that it is really important that a five-star hotel is built adjacent to the main square in order to create gravity for the whole space. “The new hotel would become a major point of reference for visitors and it would create a fantastic relation with the entire public space.”
