Albanian Government Council of Ministers

Thanks to investments in infrastructure flood damage was minimized, said on Thursday to the Parliament Prime Minister Edi Rama.

While retorting to opposition claims during today’s plenary session in the Parliament on the situation provoked by floods in the country, PM Rama pointed to cases when the present-day opposition, when in power, allowed illegal constructions which now cause flooding. That’s why the opposition has no right to demand explanation today.

The prime minister reiterated his pledge that there will be no more flooding provoked by man except for natural causes.

“Thanks to the investments we made we managed to avoid a tragic situation because the investments meant more protection”, said PM Rama.

The prime minister expressed gratitude for all the countries of the region offering help although the government didn’t appeal for any help.

PM Rama said that no reservoir was opened and considered fake news what opposition said of Kashar municipal unit in Tirana being flooded following opening of the reservoirs.

The prime minister emphasized that investigation is underway into flooding of the City Park Shopping Mall, located some 12 km away from Tirana, and according to preliminary investigation, it comes out that it happened because of illegal building on a water collector. Following investigation, the responsible persons will be brought to justice, said PM Rama.

The prime minister also emphasized that the government has compensated every flooded household in 2015 through a fund of 2.2 billion lekë, 1.7 billion from the EU and 500 million from the government of Albania.
