A three-storey underground parking lot at the Çerçiz in Gjirokaster, designed to provide parking space for at least 300 vehicles, will become available to the countless visitors and local residents in the museum city, as the historical heart of the city a UNESCO World Heritage site in southern Albania is being reclaimed and transformed into a car-free and pedestrian area. The second phase of the project is underway with stone cladding of the entire pedestrian area.

Prime Minister Edi Rama today visited the stone city of Gjirokaster and, together with the Minister of Tourism and Environment Mirela Kumbaro and Mayor Flamur Golemi, he inspected progress of work and was briefed on the project’s details.

“The parking’s walls and arches will be clad by stone, while this is all part of the requalification project to make the whole area accessible for children and everyone else as part of the efforts to expand area of public spaces and green areas. This entire public square will feature various colourful stone motifs,” Tourism Minister Kumbaro said.

New infrastructure bypasses traffic congestion from the Old Bazaar area, creating a new urban and underground space, giving breath to the city and fresh quality to the historical centre of the museum city.
