The Regional Hospital of Gjirokastër, a historic landmark, is undergoing a complete transformation with modern services and state-of-the-art technology. Spanning 8,600 m², the hospital offers a wide range of specialties including emergency care, surgery, pediatrics, infectious diseases, radiology, and pathology, serving the 60,000 residents of the region.
Prime Minister Rama visited the site as part of his ongoing inspection of construction projects in Gjirokastër, accompanied by the Minister of Health and Social Protection, Albana Koçiu.
“The renovation of the Regional Hospital of Gjirokastër began last December. This project includes the complete rehabilitation of a four-story building, which is vital for the entire district of Gjirokastër. The investment, funded by the state budget, amounts to 4.7 million euros. The work is being carried out in three phases to ensure that healthcare services are not disrupted. This is a critical aspect that we always consider when renovating hospital buildings. The hospital serves 60,000 residents and provides a full range of services such as surgery. Right now, we are in the pediatric department, while the building itself is four stories. The basement hosts the radiology department, and the second and third floors are dedicated to surgery. The full rehabilitation of the building will be completed, including the furnishing and installation of the latest medical equipment, which will enable the 153 medical staff—comprising 45 doctors and additional nurses—to deliver top-tier healthcare,” explained Minister Koçiu, emphasizing that the project is expected to be completed within 24 months.
Prime Minister Rama praised the quality of the ongoing work and offered suggestions regarding the project’s details to ensure that the building retains its historical charm.
“Since this is a building with historical significance, care must be taken with the color choices. As it is being restored to its original architectural design, we must preserve that aesthetic. The combination of gray and white works well. It’s a historic building, and this project will also include a capot system, ensuring energy efficiency,” added the Prime Minister.
