Albanian Government Council of Ministers

Left in oblivion and obstructed by the sediment collected during the past two decades, irrigation canals have been reopened and made fully available to farmers. Durres was the next stop of the Prime Minister Rama, who accompanied the Mayor Vangjush Dako, inspected works for the revitalization and operation of the irrigation canals to restore underwater 6 thousand hectares of farmland.

“We opened the reservoir 2 months ago, and now we have this irrigation canal. Works are worth approximately 60 million ALL. There are some 5 thousand farm households benefitting from this investment. This canal was out of use for 25 years”, the Mayor of Durres Vangjush Dako said.

Works for this two-phase investment are expected to be completed within two weeks. “The main artery is 7 kilometres long, and second canals are approximately 21 kilometres, which were made operative within 30 days with approximately 5-6 thousand hectares put under water in this period. The first phase was completed, and the other scheme will be completed within 10-15 days. We have attached a lot of importance to the works for facilities serving citizens. In addition, the cleaning has been carried out perfectly”, the works leader said.

The rehabilitation of irrigation and drainage system is an important part of the government program for the recovery of agriculture, with a positive impact on the next agricultural season, not only in terms of economic growth of farm households, but also of the national economy.

The road Vrinë – Fshati Rinia was another road left in ruins, almost impossible to travel due to potholes, which had hampered the daily life of residents and the connection of farmers to the market. The road is connected to the coast, and the number of vacationers in this area has increased in recent years. Following an 81-million ALL investment, the works for its reconstruction have started also here.

“This 5.5 kilometre road serves approximately 5 thousand residents of this area. This is not only an industrial and agricultural area, but also a tourist one because the end of this road connects the highway to the coast. So, there is a new beach, a new area to develop and which hosted many vacationers this year”, Mayor Vangjush Dako said.

The road was reconstructed one year after it was promised to local residents, whom the Mayor assured that further investments will be made in infrastructure.

“The population has grown not only due to the new residents, but also to daily tourists from Durres because the beach is very clean, with a beautiful sand. The citizens here are all new. They came after the floods in Fierza in 94-95. The municipality has helped them a lot, both in terms of the improvement of infrastructure and in terms of legalizations and urbanization in general. We promised this road during the campaign, and we made it in almost one year”, the mayor said.
