The secondary school “Llesh Nik Daka” in Lezhe is another educational facility set to open its doors to around 535 pupils in November. Hundreds of new schools are being built from scratch around a year after the powerful earthquake that caused devastating affects to many educational facilities in the country. The schools reconstruction program is designed not only to provide a safe shelter for schoolchildren, but also meet high standards for habitability and environmental comfort and provide spaces for contemporary education.

Prime Minister Rama inspected work to construct the new school building, accompanied by the Minister of State for Reconstruction, Arben Ahmetaj.

By end of September – Ahmetaj said – work will work to construct the educational facilities due to be funded by the European Union and the international organizations. “The list of an initial group of 22 schools was published on the UNDP website a day ago. The tender procedures are underway and construction of first five schools is slated to begin by end of September. Work to construct the rest of 22 schools is set to commence ever y week. There are 40 other schools to be built and the verification process is underway, along with what UNDP usually does, the consultation process with the public,” Ahmetaj said.

A series of construction sites have been launched for months now to build new schools and kindergartens on the ruins of the buildings that were left devastated after the powerful earthquake that hit Albania on Nov 26 last year. The new educational facilities being rebuilt as part of the post-earthquake recovery and reconstruction programme are designed to meet high standards for habitability and environmental comfort and provide spaces for contemporary education.

Intense work is underway to make sure new school buildings open doors to their students on Nov 26, the first anniversary of the tragic earthquake that struck the country last year.

Some 143 new schools up to European standards will complete within 2021 to replace the previous old buildings heavily damaged by the 2019 disaster.
