New Regional Memorial Hospital in Fier became operational and launched an initial phase of healthcare service in recent days. A combined staff Albanian and Turkish health workers have provided care services to the first 100 patients in a modern, integrated facility equipped with the state-of-art medical devices and equipment. A total of 18 patients have been admitted to the newly-built facility, including patients who have undergone surgical interventions.

Prime Minister Edi Rama, accompanied by the Minister of Health and Social Protection, toured the new Memorial Hospital in Fier today.

Accompanied by managers and medical personnel, PM Rama visited various hospital premises and was familiarized with a range of care services provided at the new facility and plans to further expand in the future.

“First doctor’s visits and medical consultations are underway. Around 100 patients have been treated received care since the hospital became operational few days ago. In the meantime, first 18 patients have been hospitalized and two surgical procedures have been performed. We have admitted patients from the regions of Vlora and Gjirokaster. A growing number of patients are seeking to receive treatment at the new hospital. The policlinic houses six consulting rooms. Patients are undergoing general medical examination by Turkish doctors in collaboration with their Albanian colleagues,” the hospital’s director said as they toured several wards.

Memorial Hospital has an annual admission capacity of over 12.000 patients, while more than 2000 surgical procedures are scheduled to be performed each year.

For the hospital’s vice director, member of the Turkish medical personnel, development perspective in the future is very encouraging. “We are still young. It is a hospital built within a very short time. It may happen that in two years’ time you won’t know the hospital as you know it today as we plan to transform it. If we will succeed in transitioning to a digitalized system, the hospital’s performance will improve significantly and it will facilitate work for whole team of health professionals working here,” he said.

Briefing on the project designed to digitalize hospital service, Health Minister affirmed that a plan is already in place. “We have already devised a plan on building entire digitalization platform. We want to borrow Turkish best practice and experience as they have developed a complete system and I am confident we will apply similar system soon,” Health Minister Manastirliu said.

On his part, Prime Minister Edi Rama underlined that the Regional Memorial Hospital in Fier is not merely a healthcare provider, but also a know-how and experience transfer centre.

“I am profoundly grateful to whole Turkish medical personnel working now here and I would like to tell them that during the talks with the (Turkish) President we have agreed this is not just a matter of a hospital or an additional care service, which is definitely very important, but most importantly this is a know-how transfer centre. In a way, your mission is both to provide care service, as you usually do, as well as to transfer all your know-how, experience and expertise to your Albanian colleagues. We want this hospital become a know-how transfer centre for the medical personnel at other hospitals across the country. Thank you very much. We are ready to assist and address all your needs. We want you feel like home,” the Premier said as he addressed to the medical personnel.
