Public transportation in the capital will reach new heights thanks to the ongoing project for the construction of the new Northern Terminal.
With the work completed so far, the terminal features a plaza that serves as a bus bay area for buses heading to central destinations. It has a capacity of 30 departure spots for the southern area, 19 for the northern area, 5 for passenger drop-offs, and 45 parking spots.
Upon completion, the new Bus Terminal will provide a new public green area for the city of Tirana, with passenger zones organized around an accessible public garden, which can be enjoyed by both passengers and residents alike.
The pedestrian areas will be paved with asphalt, and the urban furniture will be designed to create a warm, family-friendly environment with long-term maintenance in mind.
Prime Minister Rama continued his inspections today at the site where the new terminal is being built, accompanied by Deputy Mayor Anuela Ristani.
“The terminal is a major, long-awaited investment. It includes 30 departure points for buses heading south and 19 for the north. These areas are not only well-organized but also feature designated spaces for parking, waiting, and passenger drop-offs. What stands out the most is that the entire space has been designed with priority given to pedestrians and green areas. The bus section, with its emissions and noise, will be located at the back, making the journey itself much more pleasant thanks to the service and pedestrian zones. There will also be a dedicated ‘Kiss and Travel’ area, where people can drop off passengers, just like at airports. Additionally, there will be designated areas for both passenger drop-off and pick-up,” explained Deputy Mayor Anuela Ristani.
Prime Minister Rama noted that although the terminal project was initiated 10 years ago, it faced numerous obstacles that delayed its implementation.
“Today, this is an important milestone because I want the citizens of Tirana to hear the full story of this project, which was promised back in 2015 when the revitalization of Tirana began. The project was set in motion and financed. Today, we are in 2025, and the process began six months ago, after nearly 10 years of delays caused by completely insensitive and irresponsible court decisions,” said Prime Minister Rama, emphasizing that what was once a barren area will now be transformed into modern infrastructure, similar to what you would find in Europe.
“Now, the terminals here will be like those in Europe. The terminal will be very long, with all the facilities—seating, electronic departure and arrival boards, services, and electronic ticketing. The buses will be properly parked. I believe it will be completed within this year.
Life has taught me to be prepared for the unexpected, so let’s say that by Christmas, those coming to Tirana from abroad or those wanting to travel south by bus will have a terminal just like in Europe. This is very good news, a great relief. And of course, it will increase the value of the neighborhood, raise property values for those who own homes, and benefit those who will buy homes later. It will also provide a new dimension to the connection between Tirana and Kamza. Because now, not only Kamza but also Durrës are part of a single metropolitan area, and they will be fully integrated in the coming years,” said the Prime Minister.
