Albanian Government Council of Ministers

Investment projects on construction of water supply systems designed to ensure 24-hour water supply to citizens across the country have entered an advanced stage in many municipalities. The government’s ambitious goal is to make sure that residents in all urban centres across Albania receive 24-hour potable water supply within 2022.

Prime Minister Edi Rama today inspected one of these investments in the northern-western municipality of Vau i Dejes, where construction of new water supply is nearing completion to finally provide constant supply to an area facing water shortages on just two hours a day over the past 50 years. The 22.6 km long network will deliver constant fresh water to every household in the area. The Director of the Water Supply in Vau i Dejes underlined that the investment will ensure 24-hour supply to local residents for a 25-year period.

The previous water supply network was built in’60s and was totally degraded. Lawmaker Ilir Beqja, representing Shkodra constituency, said that the new water supply system has increased water availability and ensures 24-hour supply of safe water of highest quality and, as local residents confirm, it will help households to reduce electricity consumption, because providing water for them incurred other high cost.

PM Rama confirmed his government objective to ensure 24-hour water supply to all urban centres throughout Albania within 2022. “We can openly state now that all big urban centres in Albania will receive 24-hour drinkable water supply within 2022 and Tirana within 2022-2023, as situation there is more complex. This is the last time when water is a topic of an election campaign in the country as we will ultimately address this issue and we will ensure 24-hour supply to all big urban centres. This is an area that has faced water scarcity also during the communist regime in the country and we are addressing this issue once and for good.”

Mr. Beqaj informed that work to construct the water supply system in Mjede is scheduled to kick off next week and the project will provide supply to more than 1700 households.
