The government-funded project includes transformation of the emergency ward, the maternity’s Women’s Centre and the operating theatre to meet highest standards in terms of quality of care for mothers and newborns.

The new laboratory service has been recently launched in the maternity hospital as part of the national network of state-of-art medical laboratories being installed and becoming operational in all public hospitals across the country.

Prime Minister Edi Rama, accompanied by the Minister of Health and Social Protection Ogerta Manastirliu, visited Koço Gliozheni maternity hospital to learn more about the investment project, set to begin this summer, and visit the new medical laboratory.

“The first phase of the investment is estimated at over $ one million,” the hospital Director Genci Hyska said, adding that “the investment’s first phase includes reconstruction of the operative rooms and construction of two additional operative theatres, complete reconstruction of the midwifery unit. “Building emergency admission unit, a lacking service at this hospital, is equally important. A complete ensemble of care services will become available along with the women’s centre. Second phase of the investment includes reconstruction of the Neonatology Service, while the third phase entails the entire part of thermal insulation system and installation of the solar panels.

The new medical laboratory is already part of the public laboratories network through the public private partnership. Health Minister Manastirliu the modern investment in this laboratory has significantly enhanced the range of medical tests performed there.

“Only 27 tests and laboratory examinations were performed by the previous laboratory, while the range of these tests has increased to 163 thanks to the increased capacities of the new laboratory, without taking into account the fact that the main laboratory at University Hospital Centre meets our demands regarding any kind of required examination and test,” hospital Director Genci Hyska said.
