Thanks to a 442 million ALL investment in infrastructure and modern equipment in these 33 months, from simply a sanatorium which treated patients with lung disease, the University Hospital “Shefqet Ndroqi” has been transformed in a Regional Centre Hospital.

From now on, anyone who needs to be treated for internal or heart disease, or have a general surgery can come in this hospital. Prime Minister Edi Rama and Health Minister Ilir Beqaj visited today some of the new pavilions of this hospital. In addition to a thorough reconstruction of infrastructure, the hospital has been equipped with the most modern equipment of cardiology, intensive care unit, hemodynamic, imaging, fibrogastroscopy and bronchoscopy, etc.

Director of the hospital Prof Dr Perlat Kapisyzi said that since it was transformed into a regional hospital, the former sanatorium has acquired a new dimension. “From a hospital to treat lung disease, our university hospital “Shefqet Ndroqi” has been transformed since two years in a hospital for the treatment of general diseases, in a regional hospital and in a university hospital.”

The number of patients has significantly increased since the hospital was transformed in a general hospital. According to Minister Beqaj, in addition to easing the flow of patients coming to the TUHC, it has reduced the time and costs of service, especially for those coming from other cities. Only the centre of imaging receives 10 patients per day, while the urgency admissions have increased by 3.5% in 2015, the reception of patients by 51.2%, and general surgery by 24%. 445 coronarography procedures have been performed in patients on standby since September last year. “We have been providing this service even here since last September, and this has helped us to reduce the awaiting time. After what we did in the THUC and later here in these three years, the awaiting time has been reduced from 6 months to 30-35 days.” – Minister Beqaj said during his visit in the hemodynamic pavilion.

For Prime Minister Edi Rama this hospital is the image of the government’s vision for a European public health system which competes with the private sector. “It is a real pleasure to have this family photo taken with such a terrific team that managed to reverse, in a relatively short period of time, a multi-year bitter history of the demolition of such an important hospital, and also to transform it in a welcoming home, with a modern infrastructure and a qualified and dedicated service for all those who come here to be checked. This is not the old sanatorium, but a regional hospital that is the mirror of our ambition for a revived health system, a public health service that competes with any private hospital in Tirana.”

Patients told the Prime Minister about the transformation of this hospital. “We are very happy with the transformations we have seen here.”  In the meantime, the third phase of investments in the centre for examinations and in the infrastructure of administration buildings is being implemented.
