The modern treatment of the Elbasan landfill will be transformed into a model extended across the country. In addition to processing waste, this plant certified according to European Union standards will be able to produce energy.
“We promised this to Elbasan, and we are keeping our promise within the term. In addition to solving a problem, we have actually gone to a completely different stage that no other city has”- Prime Minister Rama said during the inspection.
Unlike other landfills, which would cost the municipality at least two million Euros for waste or waste disposal, the municipality of Elbasan will pay nothing. This model will be extended to other regions of the country. “We are preparing to renew this experience in some other areas, remaining hopeful that this problem will be solved to a significant extent once and for all, and from a country covered everywhere by waste, not only due to the lack of storage points, but also because of the poisons waste produces, Albania will become a normal country in this respect, as it actually deserves to be”- the head of government said.
Meanwhile, the Minister of Environment Lefter Koka told about the energy benefits of this investment. “It will produce approximately 2.8MW of which 0.5 will be required for the plant, whereas the rest will be revenues going to the Municipality of Elbasan.”
In addition to the works carried out for the landfill, works have started to transfer the waste from Elbasan to the landfill, a process that will be completed within the next 3-4 months. “We are ready to begin the transfer here from old field. It has a capacity of 360 thousand m3, while the existing fertilizers are 200-250 thousand m3 of waste. There is also capacity for the coming years. I think it will be completed within the next 3-4 months, thus solving a very big problem for Elbasan. This is the first landfill with these standards. We have also obtained a CE certification for EU standards by a renowned Dutch company that certifies landfills worldwide. Right now, we are the only landfill in Albania provided with this certification”- the works director informed.
