A new spectacular public space is being rebuilt through reinvention of Vlora’s Flag Square, construction of the Independence House Park and the access infrastructure of the Trans-Balkan road leading to the seaside. The project already full steam ahead is designed to requalify the square and construct the park as new public space that will be integrated with the Waterfront Promenade, or Lungomare, in the southern coastal city. Prime Minister Edi Rama toured the site to inspect the ongoing work on the Flag Square that is totally transforming and giving a fresh look to the city’s centre.

The square and park rehabilitation project – the project manager said – features 16 different varieties of palm trees, with 80 percent of them to be planted under the ongoing project.

“Work will take place at various levels to create a complete configuration,” manager said.

Whole area has been freed from the illegal buildings creating a new space, previously invisible due to the illegal constructions blocking the view and pathway connecting Vlora’s Flag Square with the sea. According to Vlora Deputy Mayor Afrim Qendro, nothing hampers the project now and the construction site is almost totally open. The most important part of the underground infrastructure work has completed and the rain and wastewater system has been disciplined,” Qendro said.

Around 80% of the project has already taken its final shape as construction work has been intensified and is heading towards completion. Prime Minister Rama said he was pleased that the coastal city is regaining its main square now being transformed into a completely new space integrated with other parts of the city.
