Shefqet Ndroqi University Hospital in Tirana is expanding its range of health services by setting up the cardiac surgery. After successfully handling and treating COVID-19 patients, the hospital is now cope with a gradual return to normal activities in terms of the health services it provides.

Prime Minister Edi Rama, accompanied by the Minister of Health and Social Protection Ogerta Manastirliu, toured the hospital’s premises today to closely inspect not only the new cardiac surgery centre, but also the finalized investment in a state-of-the-art medical laboratory, part of the national network of public medical laboratories being built in hospital centres across the country.

“Despite the difficult situation amid the pandemic, we haven’t ceased delivering on the planned investments designed to widen the range of health care services to citizens. The Cardiac Surgery service completes an important cycle regarding cardiovascular diseases, where in addition to the Hemodynamic Service already set up about 5 years ago, the Cardiac Surgery service will allow at least 400 surgical procedures a year once the service becomes fully operational. We are about to complete investment in the operating theatre and a new intensive care unit,” Health Minister Manastirliu said.

Surgical procedures on cardiovascular patients are scheduled to begin in September and the service will become fully operational by end of the year. “This is the first time when a cardiac surgery service is introduced at this hospital and the service will be fully operational by January next year. This will help the public health system to provide right service as soon as possible,” one of the doctors said.

Doctors who are expected to return back home after the call under “Ready for Albania” project will join the medical personnel at Shefqet Ndroqi University Hospital Centre.

“To implement projects like this and in the framework of the call Ready for Albania”, a cardiac surgeon Dr. Fagu, currently working in Germany, has expressed readiness to work with us and is getting ready to leave a clinic in Germany and start working here as a heart surgeon,” Health Minister said.
