Press Statement
As soon as returned from the Summit of Wales, Prime Minister Edi Rama started meetings to discuss the new situation created after the Governor of the Bank of Albania was arrested last night.
Since early morning, the Prime Minister had a meeting with the Speaker of the Parliament, followed by a series of calls with international partners and government experts, and then a meeting with representatives of the International Monetary Fund.
Support to the prosecutor’s office and to justice in order to work thoroughly what they started and to guarantee the independence of the Bank of Albania to overcome the situation with professionalism and moral authority, must and will be two fixed points of reference for the government while addressing this major problem.
The Prime Minister and the Government, in close cooperation with the Parliament, will take with high moral accountability and full legal responsibility, all necessary steps to make the Bank of Albania emerge morally stronger, institutionally safer, more transparent as far as administration is concerned and obviously completely independent, from such a situation that should not be repeated again in the future.
Prime Minister Edi Rama would like to express the Government’s respect and support to all technicians of the Bank of Albania whose outstanding skills and dedicated work are a very safe basis for the indisputable stability of the institution, despite the situation created in its top management.
The Prime Minister will continue meetings.
