Municipality of Delvine, southern Albania, added to a long list of districts across the country, where residents now receive 24-hour potable water supply after long decades of water shortages and scarcity, as well as water pollution because of a totally degraded supply and distribution network. A recent investment project to renovate the water supply network resulted in a 24-km long distribution network, including the new home connections.

“Households used to receive water only for five or six hours a day. This is the first phase of the project that covers 75% of the municipality, and just a part of the population remains to receive constant supply and it is about just a suburb area. We have prepared the design and the work to construct the remaining part of the network will begin soon,” Delvine Mayor Majlinda Qilimi said as she accompanied Prime Minister Edi Rama during visit to the new water supply system.

“The water reservoir with a storage capacity of 900 cubic meters is divided into two compartments to ensure 24-hour supply to the population. We have intervened to rehabilitate the distribution network and install new home connections. The project addresses the needs of around 10, 000 residents in Delvine,” project implementation engineer explained, adding that no projects to upgrade the deteriorated supply and distribution network had been implemented over the past 50 years.

Prime Minister Edi Rama reiterated that ensuring 24-hour supply will become a reality for residents in all municipalities across the country within 2022. “This was a decades-long tormenting situation for everyone that is already over now. Residents in Delvina and many parts across the country now receive 24-hour water supply. As many as 120 construction sites have been opened with work nearing completion or in the process. Residents in all urban areas will receive 24-hour supply within 2022 and all villages with residential intensity. We will put an end to issue so that it will no longer be a topic for debates and constant promise during electoral campaigns and this is a significant achievement,” the Prime Minister said.
