Statement of the Minister of Energy and Industry, Mr. Damian Gjiknuri, following the Council of Ministers meeting:

I am pleased to announce today an important decision of the Council of Ministers related to the continuation of construction works for the “South Ring” and a moratorium on the KfW bank loan. This funding, provided by the Federal Republic of Germany, is very important to the South Ring 110 kV power transmission line.

This investment, in the wake of all projects for power infrastructure managed by the Albanian government, will enhance energy supply by providing a more efficient energy system in the southern areas of the country.

The “South Ring” project, together with another project with Kosovo that will be actualized shortly, will be followed by other important projects that will connect Albania with other countries in the region. For example, it will be followed by a connection project with Macedonia, planned for next year, and other investments along the south coast which will improve electricity supply in all these areas.

The power transmission grid is a critical infrastructure for Albania. Despite historic difficulties, the decision to continue investing in energy shows government’s determination to transform this problematic sector into a promoter of economic growth. This will be achieved through providing lasting energy supply and stable prices, not only for families but also for investors and other industrial customers in Albania.
