The Kukes International Airport, the largest construction site currently operational in the north-eastern Albanian town, is taking shape quickly thanks to the ongoing intense construction work for months now.
Prime Minister Edi Rama visited the site to inspect progress of ongoing work to build the passengers terminal and the work to extend the airport’s runway. Kukes Mayor Safet Gjici said every construction process is being carried out in line with best European standards and that given the work progress to date the construction of the new airport will complete very soon.
“With the current pace of construction work, I am convinced that the airport will complete by end of March. Rehabilitation of the rain and wastewater remains to complete. A brand new road linking airport with the main highway has also yet to complete. Travellers from Kosovo will also be able to drive straight to the airport too,” Gjici said.
Praising the builder for the major work done so far, the Prime Minister encouraged the continuation of the same pace of work, so that the first inaugural flights start next spring.
“I would like to bring the first batch of London-based Kukes migrants on April 23. Construction of the new bridge and entire rehabilitation of the Nation’s Highway will also complete normally by spring or early May. The Nation’s Highway will then become really spectacular with night lighting,” the Premier said, noting that construction of the airport will also pave the way to investments in Shishtavec to turn the picturesque village into a major mountain tourism destination.
