The opposition should completely participate in the process of supporting Albania’s bid to open the European Union accession talks, Prime Minister Edi Rama told Albanian reporters while on an official visit to Bulgaria on Thursday, as he commented an invitation to the country’s opposition “for a national pact for Europe.”
The government head stated that the parliamentary majority was seeking a cross-party consensus and reach an amicable settlement on the election of the country’s new Prosecutor-General, although the majority enjoys the Constitutional opportunity to chose the new chief prosecutor by a simple majority in the parliament.
“My invitation is for a national pact for Europe with a view to opening the accession negotiations as the next stage of Albania and not the government alone and make use of the Prosecutor-General election issue as an important starting point, given the fact that although we have the Constitutional opportunities to chose chief prosecutor with a simple majority, we want to create the conditions for an amicable settlement with the opposition so that the opposition becomes completely involved in the process of supporting Albania to open the negotiations,” Rama stated.
Earlier today, PM Rama renewed his invitation to the main opposition Democratic Party chairman, Lulzim Basha, to sit down to talk over the election of Albania’s next the General Prosecutor.
“Lulzim Basha, don’t wait for foreigners to read the country’s Constitution, but let us sit and talk in Albanian about Albania, as we are assigned to do by those who elected us,” PM Rama wrote on his Facebook page.
