1800 families in the villages of Elbasan can finally irrigate again their lands after more than 20 years. It was totally impossible for these families to work their agricultural lands and benefit from their products.
Thanks to the fund made available by the government to municipalities for the regeneration of the irrigation and drainage system across the country – a fund that exceeds any award of funds by previous governments – the Municipality of Elbasan is carrying out works for the opening and maintenance of irrigation and drainage canals.
70% of the irrigation canals for agricultural lands have been made fully operational to date, while the new irrigation network will be expanded by some kilometres with primary and secondary irrigation canals that will be functional for the first time, thus covering an area of 4500 hectares.
Accompanied by Mayor Qazim Sejdini, Prime Minister Edi Rama was today in Elbasan to see closely the progress of works.
Mayor Sejdini informed that the cleaning the main canals will terminate very soon, and work will begin for the secondary canals. “1800 families benefit from this main canal that irrigates 1 thousand hectares. In addition to these canals that to date make up 70% across the municipality, 100% of the clearing of canals will be completed by May 31, and we will start with the secondary canals. This is very important, because these canals have been out of order for 20 years. There are 4500 hectares in Elbasan that need to be irrigated, plus 2000 hectares that haven’t been irrigated throughout these 20 years. This is unbelievable.”
