Koman Road is the most recent construction project in the municipality of Vau i Dejës, Shkodra. This 31-kilometer stretch, which connects the two hydroelectric power plants, Vau i Dejës and Koman, is also the gateway for thousands of tourists from around the world to explore the Albanian Alps.
Despite its significance, the road had fallen into disrepair, posing risks to people and offering inadequate infrastructure for tourism, both in the north and across the country.
The full reconstruction is being carried out by the Albanian Power Corporation due to its operations between the two hydroelectric plants. This represents the first step towards sustainable development in one of the country’s most stunning areas.
Today, Prime Minister Edi Rama visited the construction site with Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Infrastructure and Energy, Belinda Balluku, and the Mayor of Shkodra, Benet Beci.
“This road was built in the 1980s; it stretches over 31 kilometers. We refer to it as a technological road, linking the two hydroelectric plants. The current state of the road certainly creates significant issues, especially in terms of the energy situation between the two plants. We encounter various emergencies and staff transfers between the plants, which is why the road is being reconstructed. The reconstruction is being carried out by the Albanian Power Corporation due to its operations between the Vau i Dejës and Koman hydroelectric plants. The road is in poor condition. After a comprehensive analysis that began in 2020, and following the financial stabilization of the Power Corporation, we concluded that this road needs to be reconstructed. The Albanian Power Corporation is one of the entities in Albania with a highly developed corporate social responsibility program. Wherever it operates, it focuses not only on its main product, energy production, but also on ensuring worker safety, improving operational efficiency, and, above all, serving the community.”
Prime Minister Rama explained that with the construction of this road, which is a comprehensive reconstruction, we are delivering a high-quality road in terms of its technical aspects, while also providing the community with a road that will significantly support the growth of tourism in the area. This is particularly significant, as in recent years, the Albanian Power Corporation has identified a high number of tourists visiting both the Koman Dam and the entire lake. Upon completion of this 31-kilometer reconstruction, the entire community will benefit. – explained Deputy Prime Minister Balluku.
Prime Minister Rama, on the other hand, emphasized that the new road would provide a fresh boost to the region’s tourism. “This road, which you were worried about, will be built, and it will provide much-needed security and stability for all the work being done here by the two hydroelectric plants. It will also give a significant boost to tourism. What we say, we do—but the key is patience. Not everything happens immediately, but now it’s this road’s turn. We will complete it, and the important thing is that we do it excellently,” he said.
