The coastline of the port city of Durres on the Adriatic coast and the adjacent promenade Taulantia, from a ruined, desolate waste disposal site is now undergoing a process of converting to a central park and recreational area, offering public spaces for over 175,000 local residents and a growing number of visitors to Albania’s largest second city.
“The project along 1-km coastline includes rehabilitation of around 30 000 square meters of squares and construction of steps along the length of the square to offer direct access to the sea. Project also includes creation of some 20 000 square meters of green public spaces, planting around 500 trees and around 6500 ornamental trees and evergreen shrubs, sports fields, playgrounds, parking lots,” said Dritan Agolli, the head of the Albanian Development Fund that is developing this investment.
Sea protection works are already underway, including the construction of a protection wall in zone No. 2 and steps and beams in zone No. 1, as well as the sea area’s filling with large amounts of rocks in zones 1 and 2. The entire central square will feature inland zones available for events and a new parking lot serving the center.
