Albanian Government Council of Ministers

The number of the quake-affected families moving into their newly-built homes is increasing constantly in Shijak as they received the keys to their homes in November, precisely a year after the natural disaster. Construction of 20 single-family dwellings completed today, bringing the number of the households due to celebrate the New Year’s Eve in their new homes in Shijak to 468. Prime Minister Edi Rama personally handed over the keys to the new houses to four families that opened their doors for first time today.

“Construction of the single-family homes according to the scoring system has completed. Construction of some 20 new houses completed today only in the municipality of Shijak. Only 80 families have failed to meet the urban criteria and they all have expressed their wish to move somewhere else or receive the government’s compensation grant under the most recent Council of Ministers’ decision. Construction of all homes in the municipality of Shijak, as we have already agreed, will complete within December 2020,” Shijak Mayor Elton Arbana said during their visit to the house of Marjana Domi, whose family benefited a 3+one bedroom new house.

The second house now belongs to Mrs. Hava Domi, the head of a family of six, who while thanking the Prime Minister said for her “it was incredible.” “I did not believe it. So thank you very much,” she said.

Hava’s new house floor plan has a size of 120 square meters, providing much larger living spaces for her family than their old house that was destroyed because of the earthquake.

“According to the scoring system, these were the initial houses whose construction kicked off 35 days ago. As we had already promised, this family moved into the newly-built home in November. The size of the house’s floor plan is 120 square meters, up from the size of 95 square meters of the old house. This family now lives in a much larger and safer house with contemporary living spaces,” Shijak Mayor said.

Local authorities and experts in the municipality of Shijak have taken all measures to supervise and make sure that builders deliver best quality standards while building the houses of the citizens currently living abroad and who are unable to closely monitor the construction process. This is the case with the new house of the family of Mrs. Shpresa Zeza, a family of six, who live in Italy. Prime Minister Edi Rama handed over the key to the new house to Shpresa’s uncle, who expressed gratitude for building the house in record time.

“Although these family members live abroad, the work to construct their house was not suspended. This 3+1 bedroom house with a floor plan of 120 square meters is much larger than the old house that covered only 87 square meters, “ Shijak Mayor explained.

The house of Mr. Hamit Zeza is built in a close distance from his niece’s home. His family is comprised of four members and they have now moved into a brand new 2+1 bedroom house.
